Rick

Rick’s head was still spinning when they walked into the stark white kitchen where the three staff were waiting for them. He’d dissect what just happened when he was alone in his room.

Marie and Joe stood around the kitchen island drinking coffee while Rita added more salt to whatever was cooking in the pot on the gas stove.

“Good morning, everyone. We met Marie on our way in, so that leaves Rita and Joe,” Spence said as both people nodded their heads. “Great, let’s get started. Where is Ellen?”

Rick loved how Spence went straight for the jugular. No warm-up, no nothing.

All three glanced back and forth, but Marie was the one to answer while the other two shook their heads. “We don’t know.”

And the questioning began.

Joe reminded Rick of Tom, and he guessed him to be in his forties. All he’d have to do is look in the file to find out, but instead of concentrating on their words, Rick preferred to watch the expressions on their faces and look for little signs that gave them away. Most people had tells or movements that gave away their real intentions or thoughts when they were nervous, scared, or lying.

For example, Rita turned her attention to her cooking every time a question was asked, avoiding answering any questions. She’d already added salt to the boiling mixture three times without tasting it once. No cook would do that, and when she tasted whatever it was, she couldn’t hide her grimace.

Joe stood as still as stone. His coffee cup cradled between his hands, staring straight at Spence. Marie continued to answer the questions as the muscles in Joe’s jaw gave away his clenched teeth, as if he was desperately trying to stay quiet.

As for Marie, she was friendly and open. Smiled often and answered every question asked with complete answers as if they’d been practiced.

“What are your hours of work?”

Marie piped up again. “Usually seven am until seven pm unless they have an event.”

“All of you?” Spence pointedly asked the other two.

“Yes,” Marie answered.

Enough was enough, and Spence was getting frustrated with their canned answers.

“Okay, either you tell me what’s going on, or I’ll drag you into the station and have you questioned separately,” Spence warned, crossing his sizeable arms.

The fear was instant. “No. No station, please,” Rita said as she broke her silence.

“You can’t take her to the police station,” Joe quickly joined in and wrapped a protective arm around Rita.

“Why?”

Rita looked between Joe and Marie as tears began streaming from her eyes. “I’m not in this country legally.”

Rick felt a weight being lifted. “Is this what the three of you are so afraid of?”

“Yes. I’m legal because I was born here,” Marie explained. “My mother would be sent back into a war zone.”

Spence uncrossed his arms and visibly relaxed. “We’re not going to report your mom to border agents. All we want is to find Ellen.”

“Can you help us do that, please?” Rick asked, hoping they knew something.

Joe set down his coffee and said, “Okay.
